If you're looking at all inclusive Cancun resorts for your vacation, honeymoon or retreat, then make sure you include a trip to El Ray during your stay there. El Ray is the home to hundreds of iguanas, a few peacocks, at least 47 historic ruins and one skeleton discovered in 2006. Although the ruins don't carry much impact according to some archaeologists in comparison to other local sites, the iguanas always seem to create more of a memory. They are fed by the local rangers and as a consequence they have little fear of humans. They will allow you to get quite close and some you can touch while others will scuttle away. The iguanas will respond very well to the invitation to feed by anyone and come running from the ruins and holes. The iguanas can easily be sexed because the males have combs and the females do not. Be sure to take your camera and place yourself back in history with an iguana!

The ruins of El Ray date back from 900AD to 1550AD when the Spanish Conquest began. They are located adjacent to the Hilton Resorts Golf Course just off Kukulkan Boulevard at KM 17 in the Southern Hotel Zone in Cancun. The El Rey Park has a small admission fee and is open 8am to 5pm. El Rey means, 'The King' in Spanish but the original site name is still unknown, although many have their beliefs. When you visit the park you will find it has plenty of mosquitoes so make sure you're protected with an appropriate insect repellent.

A careful eye will be able to discern various engravings and Mayan scripts in the building stones and a number of mural paintings. It is believed that religious ceremonial buildings and the market area form the 2 main platforms and temples.

Not too far away you can also visit other archaeological sites that are outside of Cancun. These sites are located at Chichen Itza, Uxmal, Coba and Tulum and give you a great appreciation of Maya history. If you enjoy reptiles or archaeology then make sure you put these places on your, 'places to visit list' when you go to one of the many all inclusive Cancun resorts.
